Concierge Services for Villa Guests: What's Available on St. John

Renting a private villa on St. John comes with a different set of logistics than a hotel stay. There's no front desk, no room service, no on-site restaurant. What there is — or what can be arranged — is a set of independent services that, when coordinated through a concierge, make the difference between a trip where you figure things out as you go and one that's ready when you arrive.

This is what concierge services at a St. John villa actually look like in practice: what's available, what requires advance planning, and what isn't included no matter who you ask.

What a Villa Concierge Actually Does

The term "concierge" means something different at a private villa than it does at a hotel. There's no concierge desk, no standard menu of add-ons with published prices. A villa concierge is a coordinator — someone who knows the island's vendors, understands which operators are reliable, and can make introductions or arrangements that would otherwise require you to research and book independently from off-island.

At Indo House, concierge coordination runs through our property management team, with support from Xande, our on-island boat captain. The range of services available touches nearly every part of a stay — arrival logistics, daily meals, water activities, and the kind of in-between requests that don't fit a category.

Pre-Arrival Provisioning: Stocking the Villa Before You Land

One of the most practical services available to villa guests is grocery provisioning — having your villa stocked before you arrive. On St. John, the options for doing this after you land are limited. There's one primary grocery store (Starfish Market in Cruz Bay), a handful of smaller markets, and a liquor store with uneven inventory depending on the time of year. Doing a full provisioning run after a long travel day is not how most guests want to begin a trip.

Several provisioning services operate on the island, including St. John Catering and Caribbean Concierge VI. Both can stock your kitchen based on a list you submit in advance — beverages chilled in the cooler, pantry staples put away, breakfast items ready for the first morning.

The standard lead time is three days or more. Rush provisioning is available through some services for orders placed with less than 24 hours notice, typically with an added fee. For a stay of five or more nights, pre-arrival provisioning is worth doing.

Hiring a Private Chef for Your Villa Stay

A private chef is the most consequential service a villa guest can arrange on St. John. The island has several working chefs who handle in-villa cooking — handling everything from menu planning and grocery shopping to preparation and cleanup.

Mathayom Private Chefs / St. John Catering has been one of the most consistently recommended operations on island for over a decade, recognized for in-villa catering across the USVI. DiveIn offers island-inspired dinners for villa stays and boat charters. Chef Vincent Alterio operates a smaller personal chef service covering St. John villa events and dinners.

What private chef service typically covers: custom menus built around guest preferences, groceries sourced and paid for separately, preparation in your villa kitchen, table service, and cleanup afterward. Chefs are generally booked for individual meals rather than on a daily retainer unless your stay is long and you're planning extensively.

Lead time of at least a week is advisable in high season, particularly for multi-night engagements or special occasions. Availability during the December through April peak period is competitive.

Boat Charters and Day Trips

From Indo House, the water is the starting point for most day trips. St. John's position between the rest of the USVI and the British Virgin Islands makes it a natural hub for half-day and full-day charters.

Through our boat captain Xande, guests can arrange private water transportation — to nearby beaches accessible only by water, to the BVI for a day on the water, or for snorkeling at sites not reachable by road. Small boat pickups are possible directly from Indo House's shoreline, which eliminates the need to drive to a dock for certain excursions.

For BVI day trips, the logistics are more involved: a valid passport is required for all guests, and U.S. Customs charges approximately $80 per person for the customs clearance. Operators like Salty Daze Charters USVI run private BVI charters starting around $1,425 for up to six guests, plus fuel and customs fees. Cruz Bay Watersports runs shared excursions to Jost Van Dyke from around $139 per person.

The tradeoff between private and shared: a private charter gives you control over timing and stops; a shared trip is substantially less expensive but requires you to work within a fixed itinerary and departure time. For groups of four or more, the per-person cost of a private charter often narrows considerably.

In-Villa Spa and Wellness

Several massage therapists and wellness practitioners on St. John offer mobile services — traveling to your villa rather than requiring you to drive somewhere. Mango Bliss Spa in Cruz Bay extends its menu to villa, hotel room, and boat settings. A Touch of Wellness USVI specializes in couples massage and in-villa sessions, and is among the most frequently recommended massage services on the island. St. John VI Massage is another established option.

Private yoga instruction is available through a handful of instructors who will come to your villa for a morning session on the terrace or pool deck. Lead time for any wellness service is generally two to four days; popular therapists in peak season may be booked further out.

Transportation and Airport Logistics

Arriving at St. John requires a ferry from St. Thomas — there are no direct flights. The standard route is Cyril E. King Airport in St. Thomas to Red Hook, then the public ferry to Cruz Bay. Taxis run both legs. A concierge can arrange a car service from the airport through vetted island drivers, which costs more than a taxi but simplifies the transition, particularly for families with luggage and children.

Car rental on St. John is effectively required for guests staying more than one or two days and wanting to visit the north shore beaches, hike in the National Park, or reach the east end. Indo House guests receive complimentary parking at Lumberyard in Cruz Bay for the duration of their stay, which covers the vehicle while you're at the villa (there's no street parking challenge at the property itself).

What to Plan in Advance

The concierge resources that matter most require more lead time than people expect. Private chefs and in-villa spa appointments fill quickly between December and April. BVI charters with specific departure windows and operator preferences should be booked before you arrive. Grocery provisioning needs a confirmed list at least three days out.

The services that can be arranged on shorter notice: restaurant reservations in Cruz Bay (though some popular spots book up), taxi service, beach gear rentals, and most activities run by the larger watersports operators in Cruz Bay.

A practical rule for high season: anything you'd be disappointed to miss should be booked before departure. The island is small, operators are independent, and there's no inventory buffer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a villa concierge on St. John typically help with?

A villa concierge coordinates independent service providers on your behalf — grocery provisioning, private chefs, boat charters, in-villa massage therapists, transportation, and restaurant reservations. They don't work in the villa directly but serve as a local contact who knows which vendors are reliable and can make introductions or bookings that would otherwise require significant research from off-island.

Do concierge services cost extra at a St. John villa?

Yes. Concierge coordination may be included in your villa booking, but the services themselves — chefs, charters, spa visits, provisioning — are booked and paid separately. Cost varies significantly by service: grocery provisioning is typically a delivery fee plus the cost of goods, private chefs run several hundred dollars per meal engagement, and private BVI charters start around $1,425 for a group of up to six plus fuel and customs fees.

How far in advance should I book a private chef for a St. John villa stay?

For a high season stay (December through April), book at least two weeks before arrival if you want a specific chef or a multi-night arrangement. For low season, a week or less is generally workable, though popular chefs with established reputations may still have limited availability around holidays.

Do I need a passport for a BVI day trip from St. John?

Yes. A valid passport is required for all guests on BVI excursions. U.S. Customs charges approximately $80 per person for BVI clearance. This applies regardless of whether you're on a private charter or a shared tour.

Can in-villa massage and wellness services come to Indo House?

Yes. Several mobile spa and massage services operate across St. John and travel to private villas, including Mango Bliss Spa and A Touch of Wellness USVI. Advance booking of two to four days is typical; peak season may require more lead time.
